With a global increase in the cases of obesity, a need arose for a specialised discipline that addresses this complex problem and all that it entails. Through bariatic surgery, almost exclusively performed laparoscopically today (the most frequent is the so-called abdominal bandage and sleeve resection of the stomach); the operation is able to achieve permanent weight reduction even in heavily obese patients. Moreover, bariatrics can also solve other metabolic diseases, such as diabetes (type 2 diabetes). Czech experts are the authors of many international recommendations for the treatment of severe obesity and lead Czech, as well as international educational projects. They participate in the creation of european standards for the surgical treatment of obesity, due to which they are considered globally to be the best in this discipline.
